The Robert Grayson  Studio at

Louisiana State University

Welcome to the Grayson Voice Studio at LSU. Robert Grayson continues his renowned legacy of teaching built upon his own career as a leading tenor at the New York City Opera and at many other great opera houses, and the success of dozens of singers and teachers he has trained. In the studio we strive for excellence in every skill necessary to become the best possible singer.  Joining the faculty is Artist in Residence, Paul Groves, The remarkable tenor brings his international experience and nearly 30 years as a leading tenor at the Metropolitan Opera working with the greatest conductors, directors, and singers to the cultivation of the next generation.

Great singing is achieved through the coordination of many different elements and skills.  It is not solely about accessing the mask, singing forward, lifting the palate, finding back-space,  or relaxing the tongue (or jaw, or lips).  It is not solely about breath support or physical  conditioning.  It is not solely about listening or sensing. Great technical singing is attained through the coordination of all of these elements.  It is only through a balanced and individually focused approach that you end up sounding like you and cultivate a technique that will last a lifetime.

Each lesson is evaluated for the level of preparation that is  presented, the technical progress that is made, and the sense of style and musicality that is displayed.

The studio includes singers from all degree programs (BM, BME, MM, DMA) and focuses on recruiting gifted students who will make a contribution ot LSU Opera and subsequently, the profession.  Prof. Grayson has mentored 30 DMA graduate students who teach around the USA, dozens of MM students who populate the operatic stages in the country and abroad, and countless undergrads who sing around the world and teach music throughout the USA.
